  79.                     the _I_R_I_S _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e.  The
  80.                     information listed here is product-specific; use

  82.                     product.

  86.                     The Fortran option package consists of the
  87.                     binary Fortran 77 compiler front ends, online
  88.                     man pages, and release notes. Following is a
  89.                     description of some of the files shipped with
  90.                     the Fortran product:

  104.                     If you are installing this option for the first
  105.                     time, the subsystems marked ``default'' are the
  106.                     ones that are installed if you use the ``go''
  107.                     menu item.  To install a different set of
  108.                     subsystems, use the ``install,'' ``remove,''
  109.                     ``keep,'' and ``step'' commands in _i_n_s_t to
  110.                     customize the list of subsystems to be
  111.                     installed, then select the ``go'' menu item.

  113.                     2.2  _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__M_e_t_h_o_d

  115.                     All of the subsystems for Fortran 77 can be
  116.                     installed using _i_n_s_t from IRIX.  You do not need
  117.                     to use the miniroot.  Refer to the _I_R_I_S _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e
  118.                     _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for complete installation

  139.                     2.3  _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s__f_o_r__M_I_P_S_p_r_o__F_o_r_t_r_a_n__7_7

  142.                     Before installing the MIPSpro Fortran 77 Front-
  143.                     end subsystems you must first install
  144.                     compiler_dev, compiler_eoe, ftn_dev, and ftn_eoe
  145.                     from the IRIX Development Foundation CD.
  146.  
  147.                     NOTE that the *_eoe subsystems are on the IRIX
  148.                     FOUNDATION CD for IRIX 6.5.
  149.  
  150.                     Should you desire to use the new 7.2.1 Fortran
  151.                     77 runtime libraries, you must also install
  152.                     patchSG0002759.ftn_dev_sw
  153.                     patchSG0002759.ftn_eoe_sw (*.sw64 subsystems are
  154.                     only required for 64-bit operation).  The new
  155.                     libraries are not required for standard
  156.                     operation but are recommended as they contain
  157.                     some bug fixes and performance improvements.
  158.                     The new libraries are "downward compatible" and
  159.                     old programs will continue to run correctly with
  160.                     the new libraries.  These runtime libraries are
  161.                     required for the -_c_r_a_y_l_i_b_s option which enables
  162.                     use of the Fortran 90 library, libfortran.so,
  163.                     which is based on the CRAY FFIO library.

  165.                     NOTE:
  166.  
  167.                             Patch 2759 contains both ftn77_eoe and ftn_eoe
  168.                             subsystems.  One set of these subsystems
  169.                             is marked as installable (NA) while the other is
  170.                             marked as not installable (NX).

  172.                             When installing patch 2759 on the 7.2.1 and 7.2
  173.                             compiler runtimes containing ftn_eoe,
  174.                             the ftn77_eoe subsystems are displayed as not
  175.                             installable (NX).

  177.                             When installing patch 2759 on earlier compilers
  178.                             runtimes containing ftn77_eoe,
  179.                             the ftn_eoe subsystems are displayed as not

  207.                     interfaces for multiprocessing. Patch 2773 is
  208.                     required for use with OpenMP.

  212.                     2.4  _C_o_m_p_a_t_i_b_i_l_i_t_y
  213.  
  214.                     Fortran 77 release 7.2.1 is a compiler aimed at
  215.                     software development for a MIPS3 or MIPS4
  216.                     instruction set architecture (ISA) in 64-bit (-
  217.                     _6_4) or N32 (-_n_3_2) mode, but with options to
  218.                     compile for a MIPS2 or MIPS1 ISA in 32-bit mode
  219.                     (-_3_2).  Refer to the _f_7_7(1) man pages, the
  220.                     _M_I_P_S_p_r_o _F_o_r_t_r_a_n _7_7 _P_r_o_g_r_a_m_m_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e, the
  221.                     _F_o_r_t_r_a_n _7_7 _L_a_n_g_u_a_g_e _R_e_f_e_r_e_n_c_e _M_a_n_u_a_l, the
  222.                     _M_I_P_S_p_r_o _C_o_m_p_i_l_i_n_g, _a_n_d _P_e_r_f_o_r_m_a_n_c_e _T_u_n_i_n_g _G_u_i_d_e,
  223.                     and the _M_I_P_S_p_r_o _6_4-_B_i_t _P_o_r_t_i_n_g _a_n_d _T_r_a_n_s_i_t_i_o_n

  230.                     In 32-bit mode, the 7.2.1 release of the F77
  231.                     compiler is fully compatible with the 7.2 and
  232.                     7.1 releases of the compiler. It is also
  233.                     compatible with the 3.19 release of the compiler
  234.                     with the following exceptions:

  236.                        +o There is no support for coff.
  237.  
  238.                        +o The default ISA is -_m_i_p_s_2.

  240.                     In 64-bit mode, the 7.2.1 release of the F77
  241.                     compiler follows the 64-bit Applications Binary
  242.                     Interface (ABI) and is fully compatible with the
  243.                     7.1 release of the compiler.  Objects compiled
  244.                     in 64-bit mode cannot be linked together with
  245.                     objects compiled in 32-bit mode, and 64-bit
  246.                     objects will only run in an IRIX 6.2 (or higher)
  247.                     operating system environment.

  249.                     MIPSpro 7.2.1 is fully compatible with 7.2 in
  250.                     64-bit mode.  MIPSpro 7.2.1 is fully compatible
  251.                     with 7.1 in 64-bit mode with the following

  253.                     files left over from compilations using MIPSpro
  254.                     7.1 with interprocedural optimization enabled
